First, is a social media calendar necessary? Well, pretty much, yes. Why? Three reasons:
- Helps keep your social media workflow on track and, well, flowing.
- Helps organize your posts while saving time as you can easily locate and re-use/repurpose older, evergreen posts.
- Helps with collaboration and communication when working on a marketing team.
Can you spend way too much time on your social media calendar? Um. Yuh-huh. Look, there are a ton of social media calendar apps and tools you can buy, even free templates you can download in exchange for your email. If you have the budget, it may be worth looking into some of them. Personally, my favorite social media calendar is super simple, easy to use, and free. Behold, Google calendar! What’s special about using Google Calendar as your social media calendar?
You can:
- Make an unlimited amount of calendars based on client, platform, or campaign.
- Turn each calendar on and off so you can either have a birds-eye view of everything or choose to focus on just one thing.
- In terms of content storage, you can create links to the folder from which the image comes from in your Google Docs or copy and paste the article and or image/video links.
- Share it, which is ideal if you’re working on a team. Plus, It’s mobile-friendly!
Listen, when it comes to organizational tools, project management apps and yes, social media calendars, I prefer simple. All the bells and whistles just seem to get in the way and take more time to set up and keep up.
When it comes down to it, “Social Media Calendar” is just a fancy way of saying “calendar” Heck! Use a paper calendar if that works better for you! Whatever you choose, I recommend using some sort of organizational tool to keep all social media posts/content in one place.
